Mr. William "Bill" Amey, III

Sometime in the last century, a southern boy from a not-so-small town had the idea that he wanted to play music for the rest of his life. That dream came true, but there was more than he ever imagined. Born in Durham, North Carolina, Bill was nurtured in a Black community boasting colleges, healthcare resources, thriving businesses, banking, etc. The hard edge of racism was rarely felt as a child.
After college, Bill relocated to New York, where he gave most of his attention to the jazz idiom. Bill’s first international tour came with Hugh Masekela, the South African trumpeter and human rights crusader. During this short time, Bill gave great thought to morality, philosophy, ethics, and the zeal for aligning himself with justice. Subsequently, Bill worked for the Presbyterian Church USA International Center as a fund-raising administrator. Much time was spent reading different religious writings and finalizing a principled worldview. Bill is currently serving as Treasurer for the Stagville Descendants Council and for the Stagville Memorial Project.
